In The Office: Oakland Athletics

Many Bay Area offices, particularly in the technology sector, are much more like college campuses than traditional offices, featuring a range of amenities for employees and design-heavy settings aimed at spurring creativity. Until recently, the Oakland A’s had none of that, jammed into outmoded spaces split between the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and neighboring Oracle Arena. But a new 40,000-square-foot office in Oakland’s Jack London Square changes the club’s day-to-day operations dramatically.

A waterfront location with dramatic views of the Oakland estuary, Alameda and San Francisco, the new club headquarters leans heavily into the A’s renewed focus on its Oakland roots of the past 50 years and green-and-gold color scheme. The space was developed with the aid of Devcon Construction, which also built Avaya Stadium, and Portland-based design and strategy shop Fiction.

Various conference rooms are named after Oakland neighborhoods, further highlighting the club’s locale.

“We’re competing for talent against the Facebooks, the Twitters and so forth, and we needed to differentiate ourselves,” said A’s President Dave Kaval. “And we have all of our brand pillars tied directly into this space. We see this as a great billboard for what Oakland can be.”
