The view from the studio and the sidelines

Cassidy Hubbarth

Reporter and host, NBA on ESPN

On Doris Burke’s rise: “I don’t think there’s any other analyst who carried the load she had where she did women’s college basketball, WNBA, men’s college basketball and the NBA. When you really pay attention to her journey to get to this point, where she can just focus on the NBA, the work she put in, it’s awe-inspiring. There’s a reason why she’s known as the GOAT and why she’s beloved by everybody.”

Analyst, Brooklyn Nets

On the bond among women broadcasters: “For all of us, there’s a tight bond. I’ve relied on Doris [Burke] and Annie [Meyers Drysdale] so much throughout the course of my career. Doris has been someone who has been so immensely helpful to me. I can’t say enough about how she wants those around her to grow and to be better and is just one of the biggest supporters of all of us females.”

Stephanie Ready

Courtside reporter and co-analyst

Charlotte Hornets/Fox Sports Southeast

On women continuing to advance in sports media: “There’s always going to be a first. And then when the other leagues see that it works, they’re going to follow suit. You’re starting to see that a little. You saw Beth Mowins do the play-by-play for the NFL and she was amazing. It’s a big deal and it’s unfortunate we’re still saying it’s a big deal. I think there’s people who are narrow-minded, who want to put people in boxes. Those people are being aged out.”

Rachel Nichols

Anchor, ESPN’s “The Jump”

On moving Stephanie Ready to a hybrid sideline reporter/analyst role with the Charlotte Hornets: “I was disturbed seeing her move back to the sideline. I watch a lot of Hornets games. I have League Pass. As a viewer, my viewing experience has been lessened by the fact that I hear Stephanie’s voice a lot less. She’s smart, she played the game, she’s coached men, she’s coached women. You could not get more qualified than she is. … In this time where we are seeing steps forward, that was a step backward.”

Doris Burke

Sideline reporter and analyst,

NBA on ESPN

On interviewing LeBron James: “The level of acceptance I have felt over the last several years has changed. And I would trace that directly to the reaction I get from NBA players and coaches, particularly LeBron. … I’ve had a number of people say, ‘He always addresses you by your name.’ So, it really took somebody outside of me to say, ‘Boy I just think it’s so cool.’ And I thought, ‘Oh I didn’t really realize that, but it’s true.’ And that’s when it hit me: You know what, I bet he’s affecting the fan at large, [who is thinking], ‘If the best player’s OK with her, then why shouldn’t I be?’”
