This foursome is one of the most seasoned core of designers across sports. In the big leagues, it’s tough to find a project that doesn’t have HOK’s name on it. The firm’s current work covers new arenas for the Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers, the Atlanta Falcons’ new stadium and a major renovation of the Miami Dolphins’ stadium, plus numerous pro and college practice facilities and mixed-use developments. Heinlein is immersed in both NHL arena projects, and Johnson serves as point man for Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Schrock, meanwhile, has kept his 10-year relationship intact with Oakland A’s owner Lew Wolff as both men hold out hope that a new ballpark will eventually materialize in the Bay Area, which Schrock would design. Elsewhere in MLB, the firm recently won the job to design future upgrades to Yankee Stadium, a major coup considering the Yankees have been a longtime Populous client. In the college space, Appleman has become sports architecture’s golden boy by forming master plans for long-term sports development. His work touches major projects at Notre Dame, Northwestern, Arizona State and Wisconsin, and smaller jobs at Clemson, Ohio State and Miami of Ohio. Apart from colleges, Appleman is working on upgrades to Richmond International Speedway, which could include a new minor league ballpark for the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
