Adidas has slipped to third behind Nike and Under Armour in U.S. athletic apparel sales. King, who once headed TaylorMade-Adidas Golf, is the American whom the German company has anointed to help reverse that trend. Losing NBA rights means King will have to find the right mix of athletes and technologies to make Adidas relevant again in the U.S.
