Comcast stakes claim at SunTrust Park

The Atlanta Braves and Comcast Corp. unveiled a significant deal that includes the media and technology company anchoring a new nine-story office tower at SunTrust Park, where it will locate its central division headquarters and house about 1,000 employees, as well as becoming a founding sponsor of the new SunTrust Park.

Comcast will become a founding sponsor for the new stadium and will have signage inside SunTrust Park, including a high-tech based Xfinity Lounge in right field.

Comcast is investing at least $100 million in a multi-terabit network with hopes of making SunTrust Park and the surrounding community the most connected ballpark and mixed-use development in the United States.

Comcast will provide video, voice and high-speed Internet connectivity throughout the 60-acre project, which also includes retail shops, restaurants, a hotel, an entertainment venue and residential units.

Comcast will occupy an entire nine-story office building housing its personnel, including an Innovation Lab. Comcast will have its company name atop the facility.

Most of the 1,000 jobs will be new positions for the company, Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts said.

Comcast becomes the first major office tenant at SunTrust Park. Comcast has been meeting with metro Atlanta building owners and developers over the past several months and toured several sites before more recently entering advanced talks with Braves executives.

Comcast officials said that the company’s investment in the project could exceed $100 million.
The Braves announced plans last year to develop a 150,000-square-foot to 250,000-square-foot office tower as part of the first phase of the mixed-use development overlooking the new 41,500-seat ballpark that sits about 12 miles north of its current Turner Field. The building will feature another 15,000-20,000 square feet of restaurant and hospitality space facing into the SunTrust Park plaza.

The building will open in 2017.

The Comcast network will be supported by two data centers, each with 10,000 fiber connections that are backed by dual 400-megawatt generators to ensure full redundancy.
