The show’s creation comes in conjunction with the network’s staging of the inaugural Collegiate Nationals event later this month.
The reality show, “Pro Beach or Go Home,” will document 30 of the nation’s best college volleyball players as they compete for eight spots in the Nationals, where the winning two-person team earns a wild-card entry on the AVP Tour.
AVP professionals are coaching the eight Nationals finalists, who qualified during play held in Manhattan Beach, Calif., in late March. The finalists are all college seniors who have completed their NCAA volleyball eligibility.
CSTV senior vice president Tim Pernetti said the Nationals winners are guaranteed to play in at least one summer AVP event.
NCAA volleyball is played on hard-court surfaces with six to a side; the AVP Tour features two-on-two beach play.
The premiere date for “Pro Beach” has not been set, but a CSTV spokesman said it will be in the summer, July at the earliest.Xbox and Jack in the Box are sponsoring the show, Pernetti said.
Xbox is also the presenting sponsor of the Collegiate Nationals, which features college athletes competing April 20-23 in the Reno-Tahoe, Nev., area in volleyball, snowboarding, wakeboarding, boxing, whitewater kayaking, triathlon and paintball.
Other Collegiate Nationals sponsors include Jack in the Box, Burton Snowboards and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. CSTV will air the events between April 30 and May 5. The NCAA is not affiliated with the event.
Officials from the AVP, Xbox and Jack in the Box were unavailable for comment at press time.
