NFL committee to discuss Man U deal

The NFL’s finance committee meets Tuesday morning, when it will review Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer’s pending $1.5 billion purchase of Manchester United.

Glazer
While the NFL confirmed that the committee would review the purchase, it would not say what authority the league might have over Glazer’s international foray.

Glazer would be restricted under league rules from using the Bucs as collateral for any of his loans, but the deal would not technically fall under the league’s cross-ownership policy.

That rule prohibits team owners from buying clubs in Major League Baseball, the NBA and NHL in other NFL markets. Though the NFL does compete against soccer internationally, and Man U is trying to market itself in the United States, nothing in the cross-ownership rule as written would appear to prohibit the Glazer buy.

Manchester United also has an agreement with a Las Vegas company to build a casino in Manchester. NFL rules prohibit owners from owning interests in casinos.
