Ticket to ride
Speedway Motorsports Inc. and Ticketmaster announced that the ticketing company will become the authorized ticket provider for all six SMI speedways. Before the consolidation, three tracks had deals with Tickets.com, two with Ticketmaster and one with Paciolan. The multiyear agreement includes sales and marketing distribution, electronic ticketing and online account management. Terms were not disclosed.

ESPN joins the Army
ESPN and the Army Athletic Association have entered into a five-year deal under which all of the school’s home football games, as well as select neutral-site games, will air live on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic or ESPNU. In addition, if Army becomes bowl-eligible, it would get special consideration for an at-large berth in one of the postseason games owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television. Terms were not disclosed.

Alderson joins Padres

Alderson
Sandy Alderson has left his post as executive vice president of baseball operations for Major League Baseball to accept a five-year contract as CEO of the San Diego Padres. Dick Freeman, Padres president and CEO, will remain with the team as president and COO and will report to Alderson.

China eyed for golf
IMG is close to announcing details of a golf tournament in Shanghai in November that will be the richest in Asia and will be limited to tournament winners outside the PGA Tour, The Associated Press reported. Also, the PGA Tour is expected to announce this fall that the 2006 World Cup will be held in China.
