Magic’s Weisbrod hands off some of business duties

The Orlando Magic is shuffling its front-office staff, shifting day-to-day business operations away from chief operating officer and general manager John Weisbrod.

Weisbrod
Weisbrod, who was responsible for running the team’s basketball and business operations, is promoting executive vice president of finance Jim Fritz to executive vice president of business operations and giving him more direct business responsibilities.

“We are changing the nature of the management style of our business, and it frees me up to concentrate on the team,” Weisbrod said. “I’ll still oversee the business issues, but I won’t be involved in the day-to-day business side.”

Fritz was unavailable for comment at press time.

Magic owner Rich DeVos in March tapped Weisbrod, already the team’s chief operating officer, to add the duties of general manager. Under Weisbrod, the Magic already has matched last season’s full-year win total (21), and attendance through last Monday was up 2.6 percent from the same time last season to an average of 14,631 fans a game.
