Tapscott takes bigger role in Charlotte

Charlotte Bobcats owner Robert Johnson is promoting Ed Tapscott to president of Bobcats Basketball Holdings LLC.

Tapscott
Tapscott, who was executive vice president and chief operating officer of the group, now will be responsible for all of the organization’s assets, which include the NBA expansion Bobcats; WNBA Charlotte Sting; the teams’ planned regional sports network, C-SET; and management of their new arena, scheduled to open for the 2005-06 NBA season.

Johnson was expected to announce the promotion this week, sources said. Tapscott was not available to comment at press time.

The Bobcats’ basketball operation is run by Bernie Bickerstaff; the team’s sales effort is run by Tom Ward. C-SET is run by Naomi Travers. Arena management efforts are led by Barry Silberman. The Sting is run by Trudi Lacey. Each now will report to Tapscott.

Johnson hired Tapscott in January 2003 after winning approval to buy the Charlotte expansion franchise for $300 million. Tapscott is a former New York Knicks executive and previously was an agent with Advantage International.
