Sunshine State: Top markets for Nextel Cup

Two Florida markets, Orlando and Miami, posted the strongest gains in local-market ratings among the top 25 designated market areas tracked by Nielsen Media Research for NASCAR Nextel Cup coverage on Fox and NBC.

Through 10 races in 2004, including the Daytona 500 on NBC and nine races on Fox, Orlando has earned an 11.7 average rating, up 31 percent from a 8.9 average rating through the comparable date last season. Miami is up 29 percent. The Daytona 500 aired on Fox in 2003.

Sacramento (-25%) and Detroit (-22%) posted the greatest decline in ratings for races through May 2, compared to last season.

Overall nationally, Fox is averaging a 5.9/15 Nielsen rating through nine broadcasts, down 2 percent from a 6.0/15 for nine comparable races in 2003. The following chart presents Nextel Cup ratings for each of Nielsen’s top 25 TV markets.
