Sports Illustrated recently was chosen Magazine of the Year as part of Time Inc.’s sixth annual Luce Awards, which honor editorial excellence in 10 categories.
Time Inc. editor in chief Norman Pearlstine announced the awards in a memo to Time Inc. staffers, citing SI’s continued fulfillment of a “50-year-old mission to be the world’s most authoritative and compelling sports magazine.”

Time Inc. has more than 130 titles, about a third of which are sports publications.
“In an age glutted with sports information, SI singles out the most important and entertaining stories each week and tells them with stylish writing, dynamic photography and uncluttered design,” Pearlstine wrote in the memo, citing SI’s Dec. 22 issue and its year-end double issue. “It sets the agenda for debate and discussion in its field.”
Field & Stream won the award for Special Interests for its June cover story, “The Complete Outdoorsman: 50 Skills Every Sportsman Should Know.” Other sports publications recognized were Transworld Snowboarding, which received a special citation for Cover of the Year for its September issue featuring a close-up of a snowboarder, and Skiing Magazine, which received a special citation for Outstanding Story for a September piece on a ski area in the war-torn province of Kashmir.
SI managing editor Terry McDonell accepted the top award on behalf of the publication, which has now received the top honor twice in the six-year history of the awards.
