SI won’t replace retiring Hallett

Sports Illustrated President Bruce Hallett is retiring after just over two years with the magazine, according to an internal memo distributed last Thursday from Time Inc. editor in chief Norman Pearlstine and Time Inc. CEO Ann Moore.

Hallett’s decision comes in conjunction with a larger Time Inc. move to eliminate the president positions at two of its most lucrative publications, SI and People magazine.

Last week’s memo cited Hallett’s desire to finish writing a novel and to end the weekly commute to SI’s New York office that he was making from his home in Vermont.

Time Inc. will not name a replacement, instead handing oversight of the magazine to John Squires, Time Inc. executive vice president. As part of the restructuring, Mike Klingensmith, to whom Hallett had been reporting, will now oversee fellow Time Inc. publication Entertainment Weekly.
