Heggans will be responsible for Collegiate Images' day-to-day operations, contract negotiations and business development. He said he took the job because it was an opportunity to be part of building something from its infancy.
"You don't just walk away from a job at the NFL," he said. "You only leave for special opportunities, and I think this is one of those opportunities. ... I think 20 to 30 years from now we will see [Collegiate Images] in the same space as NFL Films or a similar licensing entity. It will be something of that magnitude."
With Heggans' addition, which fills a newly created position, the company now has six full-time employees.
Heggans has been at the NFL for six years and in his current position since 2001. His responsibilities include assisting the league's broadcasting department, NFL Films and NFL Enterprises in negotiating, structuring and administrating media contracts; advising teams on broadcast issues; and serving as the chief business affairs counsel for implementation of the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl and other NFL special events.
Collegiate Images was founded in 2002 as a joint venture between collegiate apparel and products licensing agent Collegiate Licensing Co. and sports media and marketing firm Convizion Inc.
