FOR THE WEEK OF 12/29/03-1/04/04
COUCH POTATOES UNITE: With the college football national championship game played on the same day as two NFL wild-card playoff games, a total count of more than 54 million households was posted for the three Jan. 4 football broadcasts. Fox’s broadcast of Green Bay’s overtime victory over Seattle, Indianapolis’ big win over Denver on CBS and LSU’s national championship win over Oklahoma on ABC provided 10 hours of football.
WILD RATINGS: More than 20.7 million households watched the Seattle-Green Bay playoff game, making it the league’s most-watched wild-card game since 22.9 million watched Green Bay-San Francisco in January 1999. Both games were on Fox. Three of the four wild-card games in 1999 earned a 40 share, a benchmark for the league.
ON THIN ICE: For the second year in a row, NBC pitted “Brian Boitano’s Skating Spectacular” in the New Year’s Day 4 p.m. ET slot opposite the Rose Bowl. Ratings for the event dropped 33 percent, from a 3.3/6 share in 2003 to a 2.2/4 share this year. The event drew its highest rating, a 3.8/8 share, on Jan. 2, 1999, its first year. No bowl games aired that day.
