PWBA needs cash infusion by Aug. 8

The Professional Women's Bowling Association has set an Aug. 8 deadline to come up with enough money to play its fall schedule.

League officials estimate the league would need about $500,000 for the fall events, which are scheduled to begin Sept. 14. As of early last week, the league still did not have the necessary money. The league wrapped up its spring/summer schedule two weekends ago in Dallas.

PWBA owner John Sommer, who's invested more than $4 million in the league since it was formed in 1981, decided in early June that he would not continue funding the tour without money from new investors, owners or sponsors. The price to buy the entire league would be between $3 million and $5 million, he said.

Sommer, an owner of several bowling centers, has sold some of his venues to fund the league.

League President John Falzone said PWBA officials are in discussions with potential investors and there is a 50-50 chance the fall schedule will take place.

If money doesn't come through for the fall tour, the league is considering a fund-raising program to try to raise enough money to restart in May 2004, Falzone said.
