Demographic and consumer profile of NHL fans

Statistical information in this section about NHL fans is made available by SportsBusiness Journal in conjunction with research partner Scarborough Sports Marketing.

Scarborough surveys 75 U.S. metropolitan markets, including 21 that are home to 24 NHL teams. The information presented here reflects responses from the 73,520 fans surveyed who identified themselves as avid fans of the NHL.

Some information presented, such as the age and gender of fans, reflects fans of specific teams who attended, watched or listened to one or more games of that team in that fan's market. Other information, such as beverage purchases and travel habits, is based on responses of fans who attended, watched or listened to any NHL game in a U.S. market. As a result, findings for Anaheim and Los Angeles and for the two New York teams and New Jersey are combined.

Raleigh is the measured market for data on Carolina Hurricanes fans. Minneapolis is the measured market for Minnesota Wild fans, though the team plays in St. Paul, and Miami is the measured market for Florida Panthers fans, though the team plays in Sunrise, Fla. Scarborough does not survey Canadian markets, so comparable information is not available for the NHL's Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver franchises.
