NFL broadcasters score a perfect 3 as 2002 ratings increase

The NFL for the 2002 season posted an increased average network TV rating for its regular-season, playoffs and Super Bowl coverage compared with its averages in 2001. It marks the first time the league has had an increase in each of the three categories under its current TV deal (see chart). That deal, which began in 1998 and features broadcast networks ABC, CBS and Fox, runs through 2005.

The average regular-season rating for cable partner ESPN increased to a 7.4 (12 share) in 2002 from a 6.3 rating (10 share) in 2001. Those cable ratings reflect the network's coverage area.
