Chevron ads back on the air
Chevron Corp. on Sept. 28 reinstated the sports advertising that it had pulled in the wake of the terrorism Sept. 11. Until the advertising was reinstated Sept. 28, the San Francisco Giants used Chevron's two units a game on KTVU-TV and Fox Sports Net for the team's own marketing, said Mario Alioto, Giants senior vice president of corporate marketing.
Bonds ratings soar
Barry Bonds' pursuit of the single-season home run record scored high ratings for television station KTVU-TV. The Oakland station's broadcast of the Oct. 5 game in which Bonds pounded his record-breaking 71st and 72nd home runs captured a 17.8 rating, but peaked as high as 24.1, with an average share of 31. That San Francisco Giants game at least doubled the audience of any other show on Bay Area televisions that night.
News conference coverage limited
Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has forbid cable channels and other television stations from carrying coaches' postgame news conferences live. The move may have been made to give exclusive access to the company's new digital channels, Leafs TV and Raptors TV, neither of which carry games live.
Leafs TV on in Ontario
Leafs TV announced a carriage agreement with Star Choice Communications Inc. for Ontario subscribers only. The new digital channel of the Toronto Maple Leafs is also seen on cable providers Rogers and Cogeco.
Sportsnet takeover complete
Rogers Communications Inc.'s takeover of Sportsnet has received official approval from Canada's broadcast regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. Rogers now owns 80 percent of the channel and Fox Sports 20 percent.
Raiders guarantee sellout for TV
The Oakland Raiders guaranteed the lifting of a local television blackout of the Oct. 7 game vs. Dallas. Although 1,500 tickets remained on sale Oct. 5, the team guaranteed that the tickets would be bought so the game could be televised locally on KTVU.
Time Warner has Canes show
The Carolina Hurricanes and Time Warner Cable have teamed up to produce a weekly show. "Carolina Hurricanes on CNN/SI," a half-hour show seen on Tuesday evenings, will run for 27 weeks. The program will air on TWC Channel 47 in the state's central and eastern districts and Channel 46 in southern North Carolina. Hurricanes officials would not comment on the terms of the deal, but said that the new offering is part of a larger deal with marketing partner Time Warner.
