Names In The News: Surgeon Says He Could Save Andy Murray's Career

A surgeon believes his "miracle" operation could save ANDY MURRAY's career and have the three-time Grand Slam champion "back competing pain-free in time for Wimbledon." Dr. EDWIN SU is the man responsible for helping American doubles player BOB BRYAN "return from chronic pain at the Australian Open thanks to his hip resurfacing operation" (London DAILY MAIL, 1/19). ... British tennis is "making an entry for the world infighting championships." The country’s leading doubles player, JAMIE MURRAY, "hit back on Monday at critical comments" from DAN EVANS. Murray said that Evans had "made a hash of his career." Murray: "For Dan to just lazily trash the doubles game, it annoys me a lot" (London TELEGRAPH, 1/21). ... Former footballer EFE SODJE and two of his brothers were "jailed for siphoning tens of thousands of pounds from a charity set up to help poor African children." Efe and his brothers were condemned by a judge for bringing "shame on their family" as they were convicted of "milking their own fundraising campaign," the Sodje Sports Foundation (TELEGRAPH, 1/21). ... England national rugby team Manager EDDIE JONES admitted to spying on opponents in the past, but said that he "stopped doing so a decade ago because it had become a waste of time." He was speaking after listening to Leeds United Manager MARCELO BIELSA reveal that he spied on League Championship rival clubs all season. Jones: "He was telling everyone what everyone does. Fifteen years ago, we used to send people out in costumes to watch training -- it used to be part of the pre-match brief" (London GUARDIAN, 1/19). ... LINDSEY VONN "may have competed in her last ski race." After failing to finish a World Cup super-G on Sunday as she "battles pain in both of her knees," Vonn said that immediate retirement "is a possibility." She added, "But I’m emotional right now. I have to really think clearly about that. It’s not a decision I make lightly or quickly" (AP, 1/20). ... CRISTIANO RONALDO is due in court in Spain on Tuesday to "answer charges of evading taxes during his nine-year reign as Spanish side Real Madrid’s all-time highest scorer." He is "expected to plead guilty after he struck a deal last year with authorities in Spain to settle the case" by paying an €18.8M fine and accepting a suspended jail sentence (REUTERS, 1/21). ... Former Korea Skating Union Vice Chair JEON MYUNG-GYU, who is "accused of having covered up repeated sexual assaults in sports, denied the allegations made against him and claimed he was being victimized by groundless accusations." He claimed he did not know short track speed skater SHIM SUK-HEE "had been sexually and physically abused" by her coach CHO JAE-BUM (KOREA TIMES, 1/21).
