Finance Notes: Shares In Top U.K. Gambling Groups Drop

Shares in the U.K.’s biggest gambling groups fell on Tuesday after the US justice department "released a legal opinion that all online gambling was illegal under federal law." Paddy Power Betfair, 888, William Hill and GVC "took a hit" following an opinion published late on Monday by U.S. assistant attorney-general Steven Engel that reversed an '11 view limiting the scope of a '60s remote gambling ban to online sports betting (FINANCIAL TIMES, 1/15).

Gate returns from the Leinster senior football championship fell by almost 30% but the provincial body's finances "were shored up by hurling," which took in more than €800,000 in '18 than football. Leinster GAA's accounts show that €5.22M was generated from games last year, down just €50,000 from '17 (IRISH INDEPENDENT, 1/15).

SK Gaming secured two new investors in Mercedes-Benz and 2nd Bundesliga side Cologne. As part of its investment, the Daimler brand’s logo will appear on the front of SK Gaming jerseys, while Cologne's #effzeh branding will appear on the sleeve. Financial terms were not disclosed (THE ESPORTS OBSERVER, 1/15).
