AFL Drops Plans For Women's Jerseys With Superhero Designs

The Australian Football League backed down on its plans for AFL Women's players to wear "superhero designed jumpers to coincide with a Marvel movie," according to Scott Gullan of the HERALD SUN. After the gimmick was exposed last month, the "public outcry" resulted in a memo being "quietly circulated to clubs informing them that the idea had been canned." Clubs were notified about plans to turn the Round 6 doubleheader at Marvel Stadium into a "marketing blitz" around the release of "Captain Marvel," the company’s first feature film with a female superhero. The movie is set to be released on March 7, two days before Collingwood plays North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs take on Melbourne in the doubleheader. There were "several areas of concern" about the whole concept for the clubs, including the design of the jumpers. One club official said, "They look like Christmas presents wrapped in gold ribbon with belts. Some would rightly see it as trivializing the competition, I mean would they do it with the men?" (HERALD SUN, 12/6).
