Formula 1 Planning To Use AI To Offer TV Viewers Exclusive Data

Formula 1 will use artificial intelligence to "better explain racing to fans during broadcasts" of events in '19, using some data not available to the teams, according to Nate Saunders of ESPN.com. F1 entered into a partnership with Amazon Web Services to "provide new graphics using its Sagemaker tool." Broadcasts used several new graphics in the '18 season and F1 execs "plan to increase this further next year." While F1 Managing Dir Ross Brawn wants to give fans access to some of the data available to teams on the pitwall, he also believes AI can "give TV viewers a unique insight of every race." He said, "For next season we're expanding F1 Insights for our viewers. By further integrating the telemetry data, such as the car position, the tire condition, even the weather, we can use Sagemaker to predict car performance, pit-stops and race strategy. There will be some exciting new AI integrations into next year's F1 TV broadcast" (ESPN.com, 12/4). MOTORSPORT's Jonathan Noble reported Brawn offered three examples of how the new graphics will be used. The first is to "offer better insight" into the state of each drivers' tires. Brawn: "We know that somebody is in trouble: his rear tires are overheating. We can look at the history of the tires and how they have worked and where he is in the race." F1 also plans to offer fans a graphic to show a prediction for the likelihood of an overtaking move taking place. The final example was a pitstop analysis, to "show fans the strategic implication of what has taken place." Brawn added, "Stopping at the right time and fitting the right tire can win or lose a race. We are going to take all the data and give the fans an insight into why they stopped and when they stopped -- did the team and driver make the right call?" (MOTORSPORT, 12/4).
