PSG Reportedly Considering Replacing Emirates With Qatar Airways

PSG is reportedly seeking €80M per year from its next shirt sponsor.GETTY IMAGES

Paris St. Germain is "keen to replace" shirt sponsor Emirates with its rival, Qatar Airways, according to Harsh Sharma of INSIDE SPORT. Qatar Airways CEO Akbal Al-Baker said that the Doha-based airline "may soon join the negotiations for the rights." PSG is expecting €80M ($91M) from the new deal. Al-Baker reportedly said that "the big expectation by the club did not scare him." Al-Baker: "It’s a problem we can obviously negotiate. ... I’m sure we would be interested if the opportunity presented itself." Emirates is "reportedly preparing to leave" the PSG shirt rights next year. The Gulf-based company is expected to move to Olympique de Marseille, whose jersey sponsorship with telecom Orange will expire this year. The UAE is "one of the nations to impose a trade and travel embargo" on Qatar for "harbouring and supporting terrorism." Emirates is "not willing" to invest the €80M per year that PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi is reportedly seeking. Emirates currently pays between €25M ($28.4M) and €30M ($34M) annually to the Ligue 1 champion (INSIDE SPORT, 11/23).
