League Notes: NRL To Limit Back-Ended Player Contracts

The National Rugby League is "about to finally stamp out the contentious back-ended player contracts." NRL CEO Todd Greenberg vowed to "tighten the rules surrounding the practice that has left clubs bursting the cap." After a meeting of club CEOs on Wednesday, Greenberg announced a working party would be formed to "explore the merits of a transfer window," which it is thought "might curb the year-round storylines of player movements" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 11/14).

WADA will open a "second phaseof its independent review into bullying allegations revealed by the BBC last month after initial findings "did not conclude that alleged bullying had taken place." WADA said that it appointed an external firm to review exec committee meeting transcripts and minutes after Athletes Committee Chair Beckie Scott said that she was "treated with disrespect" and faced "inappropriate" comments. Former Olympic champion and U.S. Anti-Doping Agency Chair Ed Moses said that response was "insufficient on numerous levels" (BBC, 11/14).

A medical report calling for headgear to be made compulsory at all levels of rugby is "unlikely to have an immediate effect on the Scotland national team if leading players have their way." Fraser Brown, who was sidelined for 11 weeks earlier this year while recovering from a concussion, said, "I don't wear one at the moment, purely as a personal preference. Going forward, I would have to see what the results [of the study] say. It will take a long time to see what the results from that study are and whether it is something that would be beneficial" (LONDON TIMES, 11/14).
