Scottish FA's Deal With Premier Sports To Bring In Up To £20M

The deal brokered by Scottish FA execs to show the Scottish Cup on the BBC and pay-per-view channel Premier Sports will "pump at least" £18M ($23.3M), and up to £20M ($25.9M), into the game, according to Gordon Parks of the Scotland DAILY RECORD. While the deal "has attracted criticism on social media, with fans complaining of having to shell out to another subscription channel," SFA CEO Ian Maxwell insisted there will be a "record number of Scottish Cup ties shown on free-to-air TV." After signing a "money-spinning deal with IMG to market Scottish Cup broadcasting rights across the globe," Maxwell said, "The William Hill Scottish Cup is a tournament that is steeped in history. In it, the clubs and players have created countless unforgettable memories and this deal will ensure that more action than ever before will be broadcast live to the nation. It will also drive significant revenue back to all the clubs who participate in the competition, ensuring ongoing investment into the game." Premier Sports will make its domestic debut in Scotland while the BBC will show additional games starting from next season, with rounds one to three "enjoying" the live TV treatment, "ensuring increased exposure" for Highland League, Lowland League and junior clubs (DAILY RECORD, 11/13).
