UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin Will Run Unopposed For Re-Election

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin will run unopposed for re-election as head of European football's governing body in February's vote, according to Simon Evans of REUTERS. UEFA announced the nominations for its leading positions after the deadline closed on Wednesday and there was "no challenger to the incumbent." Ceferin, a 51-year-old lawyer from Slovenia, was elected UEFA President in '16. Hungarian Sandor Csanyi is also set for re-election, as he is unopposed for the FIFA VP position from Europe. There will, however, be a contest for the FIFA VP role that represents the four British associations, with FA Chair Greg Clarke up against Irish FA President David Martin. The vote will be held on Feb. 7 (REUTERS, 11/8).

FAST-TRACKING VAR: The BBC's Richard Conway reported video assistant referees "could be introduced into the latter stages of this season's Champions League." UEFA announced in September that VAR will be "phased in" from '19. However, UEFA has been "discussing fast-tracking VAR for a number of weeks." Fears of "high-profile, game-changing mistakes in the biggest games," coupled with the perception that VAR was a success at the World Cup, have "prompted leading officials into a rethink" (BBC, 11/8).
