Olympic Notes: Bach Says Italy Has 'Excellent Chance' To Host '26 Games

Italy has an "excellent chance" of landing the 2026 Winter Olympics, IOC President Thomas Bach said Wednesday. Bach added that the joint bid by Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo "will have to work hard, but so far it is a very promising bid." As for the bids from Calgary and Stockholm, Bach said that "an Olympic bid is not a small thing, there will be this (referendum) in Canada and we'll see what happens" (ANSA, 11/7).

The IPC and the Int'l Ski Federation (FIS) announced a new cooperation agreement for the World Para Snow Sports. The IPC acts as the int'l federation for Para alpine skiing, Para cross-country and Para snowboard. In line with the new agreement, FIS appointed a sub-committee for those Para snow sports to act as a liaison for technical matters between FIS and the IPC and its advisory groups. The new agreement is intended to clarify the respective roles of the IPC and FIS (IPC).

The "raising of the center section of the timber roof of the gymnastics venue" for Tokyo 2020 took place Wednesday, with the under-construction interior opened to the media. The second of five sections of the Ariake Gymnastics Center roof that was raised is 70 meters wide and weighs 200 tons, "one of the world's largest timber roofs." Once completed, the overall roof will be around 120 meters long and 90 meters wide (KYODO, 11/7).
