Names In The News: Rafael Nadal To Inaugurate Academy In Cancún

RAFAEL NADAL on Tuesday announced he will inaugurate a tennis academy at a resort in Cancún, Mexico, in November. The academy in Mexico -- the first outside of Spain -- will be a subsidiary of one in Manacor, Spain, that also carries his name (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 10/23). ... The IOC appointed NAOMI KAWASE to direct the official film of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Kawase will build on a legacy of documentaries created for past Olympic Games that were held in Japan: Tokyo 1964 (directed by KON ICHIKAWA), Sapporo 1972 (MASAHIRO SHINODA) and Nagano 1998 (BUD GREENSPAN) (Tokyo 2020). ... The "potential comeback" of Australian Football League player SHANE MUMFORD is "in jeopardy" after video surfaced showing the former Greater Western Sydney Giants player snorting a line of powder. The AFL's integrity unit is "investigating the video and the potential drug use it depicts," which sources said happened three years ago in Melbourne (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 10/23). ... New Zealand-born England int'l rugby player THOMAS WALDROM announced his retirement from rugby, aged 35. The veteran spent his final season with home province Wellington after eight years playing for Premiership Rugby sides Leicester Tigers and Exeter Chiefs (STUFF, 10/23). ... All Black NEHE MILNER-SKUDDER, an ambassador for New Zealand Rugby's Headfirst program, which promotes awareness of mental health issues, "got up close and personal with a straight razor to help mark Headfirst's new partnership with Movember" (STUFF, 10/23).
