New Stadium Not Affecting Tottenham's Transfer Policy, Chair Says

Tottenham Chair Daniel Levy said that the construction of the club's new stadium "will not directly affect the club's transfer policy," according to the BBC. Tottenham made no signings in the summer, "becoming the first Premier League club to do so since the current transfer window system was adopted" in '03. Levy said that the club had a "certain amount earmarked for transfers." He added that "the club had based the summer window on certain assumptions that some players might be leaving and certain targets would be available." Levy said that Manager Mauricio Pochettino "didn't want to sign someone for the sake of it. He felt there were sufficient players in the squad, and that those coming back from injury would be like new signings." The stadium was due to open on Sept. 15, but at last week's meeting with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust, the club said that it would issue an update "in the next two to three weeks" (BBC, 10/15).

WEMBLEY SALE OPPOSITION: The AP's Rob Harris reported Levy opposes the club's temporary home of Wembley Stadium being sold for football and the NFL. Tottenham was "rescued" by the FA by being granted longer use of Wembley for its matches than originally agreed. Levy's opposition to EPL side Fulham Owner Shahid Kahn's takeover was disclosed in the minutes of a meeting he held last week with the THST. Levy was recorded saying that Khan buying Wembley would not impact Tottenham's plans for the NFL but that "he was against the sale of Wembley regardless." Tottenham "did not dispute the accuracy of the account when contacted." The FA is "working to push through the sale" to Khan despite opposition among members of the governing body's council, which includes Tottenham Dir of Football Operations Rebecca Caplehorn (AP, 10/15).
