Republic Of Ireland Manager Urges UEFA To Intervene

Martin O'Neill believes UEFA should act to remedy the Danish football dispute.GETTY IMAGES

Republic of Ireland national football team Manager Martin O'Neill believes UEFA will "have to intervene" in the Danish dispute which "could skew his team's Nations League group," according to the BBC. O'Neill's side was defeated 4-1 by Wales in its opener on Thursday in Cardiff. Wales could face a Denmark team of third-tier and futsal players on Sunday. O'Neill said, "UEFA probably should [act] and will as well, if it develops in the direction it looks to be going. UEFA will have to make some sort of statement about it then. If it does develop this way, there would certainly be a degree of unfairness about it." An "under-strength" Denmark squad was beaten 3-0 by Slovakia in a friendly on Wednesday (BBC, 9/5). SKY SPORTS' Joe Shread reported FIFPro backed the players of the Denmark national team in a statement, which said, "FIFPro would like to express complete solidarity with the Danish national team players as they seek to negotiate fair and proportionate terms with the national football association. The Danish players have acted responsibly throughout these negotiations and FIFPro strongly believes their offer to extend the terms of the previous deal on a temporary basis is in the best interests of all football stakeholders" (SKY SPORTS, 9/5).
