U.K. Government To Review Safe Standing In Football

Safe standing was introduced at League One side Shrewsbury Town earlier this month.GETTY IMAGES

The U.K. government’s review of the legal ban on standing at Premier League and League Championship matches will "consider new research into all aspects of the prohibition," including the safety of modern standing areas and whether their introduction "really will lead to clubs lowering their ticket prices," according to David Conn of the London GUARDIAN. Research will also be conducted into the "widespread practice of many supporters standing for long periods in areas with ordinary seats and how safe this is." The U.K. Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport issued a tender document inviting companies to bid "for the project of thoroughly researching all the implications of reversing the standing ban." Explaining the review, the DCMS tender said, "Given the passage of time and the many new developments in stadium safety and spectator accommodation, it is right that government consider carefully any change in policy, looking at all the evidence" (GUARDIAN, 9/5).
