Indian Government Rewards Asian Games Medal Winners

The Indian government on Tuesday rewarded the medal winners of the 18th Asian Games "with cash awards after the country registered its best-ever medal haul" in the history of the event, according to the PTI. While individual gold medal winners were each given Rs 40 lakh ($56,000), the silver and bronze winners each "took home" Rs 20 lakh ($28,000) and Rs 10 lakh ($14,000), respectively. India won 69 medals, including 15 golds, 24 silvers and 30 bronzes (PTI, 9/4).

ECB HELP: In London, Essex County Cricket Club will receive financial help from the England & Wales Cricket Board to cover Alastair Cook's salary next year after he "decided to call time" on his int'l career. As a centrally contracted player, his salary is worth more than £1M ($1.3M) a year and is paid by the ECB, but he will take a "significant pay cut to return to domestic cricket" and is likely to earn between £120,000 ($154,250) and £150,000 ($192,800) at Essex (LONDON TIMES, 9/4).
