AFE To Confirm Opposition To La Liga Games In U.S.

The captains of each La Liga team will meet on Wednesday at the HQ of the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) to "analyze the situation and release a statement expressing the AFE's opinion on the schedule and games in the U.S.," according to Javier G. Matallanas of AS. The AFE "will voice its complaints to La Liga regarding game times, as it is difficult for fans to follow" games that start late and end after midnight. Above all, the AFE "will confirm its decision not to play games in the United States, as it was not informed" of the agreement La Liga reached with Relevent (AS, 8/21). The EP reported Spanish Minister of Culture & Sport José Guirao said that La Liga playing games in the U.S. is a "communication strategy" that "does not seem bad." He added that clubs must make sure this works for their fans, "as they sustain football by attending matches every weekend" (EP, 8/21).
