Mesut Özil Launches FIFA-Focused Esports Team

German int'l and Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil "launched an esports team focused on FIFA 18," according to Trent Murray of THE ESPORTS OBSERVER. Özil announced on Twitter that he teamed up with German esports consulting agency eSports Reputation. In addition to representing several FIFA pros, eSports Reputation represents League Of Legends pro player Tristan "Power of Evil" Schrage. Özil's team will attempt to recruit "players around the world who will represent #teamozil in all major national and international [Electronic Arts] FIFA competitions." The organization represents "a number of FIFA pros," some of whom currently play for professional football clubs (THE ESPORTS OBSERVER, 8/3). In London, Matt Porter wrote Özil is "reportedly a huge FIFA fan, even taking his console with him to the World Cup in Russia so he could play in his spare time." He said at the FIFA eWorld Cup over the weekend, "I have followed the EA SPORTS FIFA 18 Global Series throughout the year and I am really impressed by the performances of the Grand Finalists." He will be "following in the footsteps" of EPL side Leicester City's Christian Fuchs, who also "recently set up his own esports team" (DAILY MAIL, 8/3).
