Football Notes: Cheaper Version Of VAR On Trial At Copa Do Brasil

For the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil, the country's "own version of VAR is on trial." The new system "is cheaper and uses half as many cameras as the one in use during the World Cup." It will debut during the Santos-Cruzeiro and Corinthians-Chapecoense matches (NOTIMEX, 8/1).

FIFA "could be forced to stop using vanishing spray for free kicks" if it does not "recognize the creator of the product," one of its inventors, Pablo Silva, said. A court in Rio de Janeiro is ruling on a case brought by Silva and Heine Allemagne, "who claim to have the patent for the invention" (EFE, 8/2).

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has prepared the packages of football uniforms it will send to the 12 boys who were rescued from a cave in Thailand in July. Each boy will receive a shirt with his name printed on the back (AS, 8/2).

Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) President Edwin Oviedo is "under growing pressure to resign as he faces accusations that he gave World Cup tickets to a judge who helped exclude him from a murder probe." Peru's PM, lawmakers and scores of Peruvians on social media "called for Oviedo to step down until he can clear his name." Oviedo denied the accusations and vowed to resign only if he is found guilty of wrongdoing (REUTERS, 8/1).

EPL managers will be allowed to watch replays of key moments during games "after the rules on technology in the dugout were relaxed." From this season, they can use mobile phones or tablets on the touchline to "look at passages of play or controversial incidents." These "will be relayed to them by analysts in the stands." It is accepted that "preventing the underhand use of technology is impossible" (LONDON TIMES, 8/2).

English Football League CEO Shaun Harvey said that EFL clubs take rules regarding profit and sustainability "seriously." His comments come as League Championship side Birmingham City works to lift a transfer embargo that has denied it the opportunity to register players before next Thursday’s transfer deadline. Harvey said, "From my perspective, we have been clear and we are hoping to help the club through this. Long before 9 August and deadline day I imagine the position will be resolved and the relevant club will know what it can and can't do" (London GUARDIAN, 8/1).
