EPL Clubs To Spend 'Significant' Money Before End Of Transfer Window

Deloitte said that Premier League clubs are expected to spend "significant" amounts in the remaining days of the summer transfer window, according to the BBC. English top-flight sides spent £900M ($1.05B) up until July 31, needing another £530M ($618M) worth of purchases to break last year's record of £1.4B for a single window. Liverpool has paid £170M ($198M) so far, the most of any club, including a world-record fee for a goalkeeper -- Alisson. This year's window closes on Aug. 9. The deadline was "brought forward so that clubs can complete their purchases" before hte start of the '18-19 season on Aug. 10. However, Premier League clubs will "still be able to sell players to the majority of other European clubs, whose transfer window remains open until Aug. 31. Deloitte Sports Business Group Dir Tim Bridge said, "The fact that clubs are generating record levels of revenues -- expected to reach an aggregate of £5B ($5.8B) across the 20 clubs in the 2018-19 season -- and profits means that the level of player transfer spending is not surprising" (BBC, 8/1).
