Four French Clubs Will Experiment With Safe-Standing Next Season

French Sports Minister Laura Flessel announced safe standing areas will be experimented in four stadiums in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 next season, according to L’ÉQUIPE. The four stadiums will be Sochaux (L2), Lens (L2), Amiens (L1) and St. Étienne (L1). The stadiums will either remove seats to make room for the stands or build retractable stands. In France, standing areas have been banned since the ’92 Furiani catastrophe that killed 18, but “several supporter groups have championed their return.” France’s National Supporters Group (INS) will conduct a study on the experiment’s costs and security concerns (L’ÉQUIPE, 7/11).
