Gary Lineker Tops List Of BBC's Highest-Paid Talent

The BBC published the earnings of some of its top talent, with Match of the Day host Gary Lineker "at the head of a list still dominated by men," according to Jack Bezants of the London DAILY MAIL. Lineker, presently in Russia for the World Cup, takes home around £1.75M ($2.3M) a year. Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer is seventh in the top list of earners, taking home £410,000-£419,999 ($541,680-$553,573) a year. The "salient point" in the latest publication of earnings by the BBC's broadcasters is that "there are no women in the top 12." Gabby Logan is the highest-paid female sports presenter on the BBC's books -- her work on athletics, football, rugby and Sports Personality earns her £230,000-£239,999 ($303,870-$317,080) a year. Wimbledon presenter Sue Barker, meanwhile, takes home £190,000-£199,999 ($251,020-$264,230) for her work at Wimbledon, Queen's, ATP World Tour Finals and the Australian Open (DAILY MAIL, 7/11).

'THE RIGHT DECISION': In London, Matthew Garrahan reported the BBC "narrowed the gap in pay between its leading male and female presenters," with women set to make up 40% of those paid more than £150,000 ($198,175) a year, "after criticism of the gender pay disparity at the broadcaster." But there is "still a gulf in pay" among its best-paid presenters, with only two women -- Claudia Winkleman and Vanessa Feltz -- featuring among the top 20 on-air earners. BBC Dir General Tony Hall said, "I'm not satisfied with the fact that there aren't enough women in the top 20. ... I'm absolutely not." He added that the broadcaster "was moving in the right direction." Hall: "We're trying to get a balanced range of men and women with their pay right across the organization" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 7/11).
