Finance Notes: Aston Villa Must Sell Players To Meet FFP, Coach Says

League Championship side Aston Villa Manager Steve Bruce said that the club "will probably have to sell" several of its best players to meet Financial Fair Play regulations. He said that Villa, which "missed out on a lucrative return" to the Premier League when it lost in the playoff final, has "no choice but to sell prized assets." Villa must raise £40M ($53M) to comply with FFP rules (REUTERS, 7/9).

Two former League Championship side Swansea City directors "found to be unfairly dismissed by the club" were awarded a combined compensation of more than £108,000 ($143,270). A hearing took place at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court following an employment tribunal -- held over a week last December -- which unanimously judged Steve Penny and Donald Keefe’s claims of constructive unfair dismissal were "well founded." Judge Cadney awarded Keefe £78,962 ($104,750) compensation, while Penny received £30,000 ($39,800). Both men "were given a further basic award" of £10,059 ($13,340) each (WALES ONLINE, 7/10).

I-League side East Bengal sold a 70% stake in the club to Bengaluru-based Quess Corp. The deal comes after UB Group ended its two-decade association with the club. East Bengal and Quess Corp. will have four directors each on the board of a new Quess East Bengal FC Ltd., but team operations "will be controlled by club officials" (SCROLL, 7/10).
