Event Notes: British Open Prize Fund Raised To $10.5M

The R&A announced the prize fund for this year's British Open increased by $250,000 to a total of $10.5M, with the winner taking home $1.89M. The third major of the year, which will be held at Carnoustie from July 19-22, will boost its prize fund further if more than 70 golfers "make the cut for the final two rounds" (REUTERS, 7/9).

A full women’s event at the Hong Kong Sevens "will have to wait" until the start of the next four-year cycle of the World Series. Hong Kong Rugby Union CEO Robbie McRobbie said that the body was "happy with the dates" for the 2019 Hong Kong Sevens -- April 5-7 -- which were announced last week. HKRU Chair Pieter Schats said in April that Hong Kong "would be keen to stage a standalone women's tournament during Sevens week." However, McRobbie said that it "would not be next year" (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 7/9).
