Serena Williams was unseeded at the French Open last month due to an extended absence for the birth of her first child but "she is not likely to face the same problem at the U.S. Open," according to FIELD LEVEL MEDIA. The event will update its seeding policy to "take into account a player returning from a pregnancy," according to U.S. Tennis Association President Katrina Adams. Adams said, "It's the right thing to do for these mothers that are coming back." Williams, who was ranked No. 1 in the world when she ceased playing after winning the 2017 Australian Open, is now ranked 183 (FLM, 6/23). In London, Kevin Mitchell reported John McEnroe is "adamant" Williams should be seeded at Wimbledon. The tournament seedings committee, on which the former champion sits, will decide on Tuesday whether Williams should be included among the top 32 entrants in the women's singles draw. Asked where he would rank Williams, McEnroe said, "Somewhere between one and 10 -- one and 16 at the worst" (London GUARDIAN, 6/23).
