Aussie Free-TV Industry Looks To Capitalize On Optus' Struggles

The free-to-air TV industry "has seized on Optus' World Cup streaming meltdown to argue for the government to retain millions of dollars in funding" for satellite services that broadcast programs to remote parts of Australia, according to Jennifer Duke of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. The World Cup "debacle," which has led to Optus sharing its exclusive rights with SBS, "has happened in the same week submissions are due to a review about the future of government-funded satellite services" that provide free-to-air TV to 200,000 Australians in remote areas. Part of the review will look at "potential alternatives to the satellites," noting the emergence of internet TV and providers, such as the Fairfax Media-backed Stan and Netflix, and a "slight decline in traditional broadcast viewing." The review worries some regional TV execs "who are concerned the satellite service could be wound back" in favor of streaming options. However, Optus’ World Cup "streaming failures" will be used by the free-to-air industry to push for "the satellite services to be maintained." One TV industry insider described the failure as a “gift” to broadcasters for "highlighting the importance of reliable infrastructure" (SMH, 6/21).
