Facility Notes: Councilors Approve $10M Controversial Golf Course

Two American multi-millionaires were "granted planning permission to build a controversial golf course" in Scotland on a stretch of unspoiled sand dunes. Mike Keiser and business partner Todd Warnock submitted plans to create an £8M ($10.6M) championship course at Coul, near Dornoch, in Sutherland. A petition opposing the course, which would be on a site of "special scientific interest," gathered more than 90,000 signatures. A coalition of environmental groups "also spoke out against it." Councilors ignored the controversy on Wednesday and "voted to grant planning permission to the venture" (LONDON TIMES, 6/21).

Durham Country Cricket Club finished extensive repairs to the temporary stand that collapsed during last year's T20 match between England and the West Indies, injuring three people. The repaired stand was used on Thursday "for the first time since the incident last September" (LONDON TIMES, 6/21).
