The 33-year-old "shocked tennis by retiring just weeks after winning her only grand slam title" in '13 and then announced the "equally surprising news in December that she was attempting a comeback." She wrote on Twitter, "To my dismay I must unfortunately stop my comeback attempt. The necessary increase of training doses to try to find my best level caused pain again to my right shoulder, which become incompatible with a recovery at the highest level" (London TELEGRAPH, 6/13). ... Australian cricketer ELYSE VILLANI is "heading back home in a major boon for Victoria’s women's cricket team," and perhaps Women's Big Bash League sides Melbourne Stars or Melbourne Renegades. After three seasons in Western Australia, Villani "will ply her trade for Victoria in the upcoming Women's National Cricket League season" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 6/13). ... Formula 1 Managing Dir ROSS BRAWN apologized for the "grief" model WINNIE HARLOW received after waving the checkered flag early in Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix after being "given the wrong instruction from an official." Brawn used his regular post-race debrief to apologize "for the outcry this triggered, with a lot of criticism directed to Harlow on social media." Brawn: "Supermodel Winnie Harlow was an innocent victim at the end of the race" (MOTORSPORT, 6/13).
