Top EPL Clubs Could Gain £10M In Overseas TV Money In New Deal

The Premier League’s bottom club will lose approximately £9M ($12M) in TV rights each season, with the champion gaining almost £10M ($13.4M), "if a proposal to alter the distribution of overseas revenue is voted in at the league’s annual meeting," according to Hughes & Ziegler of the LONDON TIMES. In the Premier League’s proposal, the bottom nine clubs in the table would all "effectively give millions" to the top 10 each season, with one of the biggest clubs "theoretically being able to gain" almost £30M ($40.2M) in additional TV money between '19 and '22 if it wins the title "for three successive years." The proposal, which was shared with the clubs before Thursday’s AGM in Harrogate, is based on the value of foreign rights increasing by 30% from the present level of £3.5B ($4.7M) over the '19-22 period, although "not all the overseas packages have been sold yet so the income differential could be smaller." EPL Exec Chair Richard Scudamore is "confident that the proposal will be passed at what is expected to be an acrimonious AGM." The Premier League will "face some dissent" as it attempts to gain the 14 votes required, however, as a number of clubs are "adamant that the elite are merely acting in their own self-interest and therefore have resolved to do the same" (LONDON TIMES, 6/6).
