Championship Clubs Could Keep Income From Live Streams

League Championship clubs "may be able to keep all the income from the live streaming of their matches from next year" as part of a shakeup of finances in the English Football League, according to Martyn Ziegler of the LONDON TIMES. The 72 clubs will this week hear details of proposals to "change the EFL’s model of distributing money" across the three divisions from the '19-20 season before a vote in November. One option would be to "let clubs in the Championship keep the income from the streaming of their matches rather than have it shared centrally," once production costs have been covered. In return, clubs in League One and Two "will receive a greater share of TV money from Sky’s deal" and solidarity payments from the Premier League. The prospect of being able to "benefit directly from the streaming of their own matches is likely to appeal particularly to clubs with a large fanbase" such as Leeds United and Aston Villa (LONDON TIMES, 6/5).
