Formula E To Open '18-19 Season In Saudi Arabia

Formula E announced a 10-year agreement to stage a race in Saudi Arabia, with Riyadh hosting the first race of the '18-19 season in December, according to Alex Kalinauckas of AUTOSPORT. The Riyadh event will be FE's first in the Middle East, and the race will take place on a track that will be built "on the outskirts of the city." An exact date for the inaugural race is yet to be confirmed, with the '18-19 calendar still requiring official confirmation from the FIA World Motorsport Council. The Riyadh race will be the first FE event featuring the series' new Gen2 cars (AUTOSPORT, 5/17). REUTERS' Alan Baldwin reported Saudi Arabia announced last year that, from June, women will be "allowed to drive cars -- ending the world's only ban on female driving." In January, women fans were allowed to attend a men's football match for the first time. FE Founder & CEO Alejandro Agag said, "Many other sports are already increasing their presence in Saudi Arabia and we're proud that they've chosen Formula E over other categories in racing" (REUTERS, 5/17).
