La Liga Partners With Tech Firms For El Clásico Broadcast

Sunday's clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona was broadcast in 182 countries.LA LIGA

For the Barcelona vs. Real Madrid game on Sunday at Camp Nou, La Liga partnered with "a number of leading technology providers to feature viewing technology" like True View, 4K HDR, aerial cameras, virtual reality and Laser Wall, according to Juan Fernandez Gonzalez of RAPID TV NEWS. La Liga said that its intention "is to make the potential audience of over half a billion viewers across 182 countries feel closer than ever to the action." For first time this year, fans in Latin America had access to an "Ultra HD feed of El Clásico." Mediapro was in charge of 30 Ultra HD cameras to produce the 4K signal. La Liga also included the VR Be The Player feature which "enables the viewer to get right inside the skin of the player." Fans also saw an "overlay graphic that displays a virtual straight line to clarify whether a player was offside or not" (Laser Wall) and live 3D graphics on screen during the broadcast. La Liga Chief Communications Officer Joris Evers said, "La Liga is one of the sports competitions with the most supporters in the world but not everyone has the opportunity to come to the stadiums to see the games in person. Our challenge is to bring those who are far away as close as possible to the action, and we use a lot of technology to do that" (RAPID TV NEWS, 5/5). In Madrid, Santi Giménez reported La Liga Dir of Audiovisual Melcior Soler said that the technology used for Sunday's game "is superior to what is utilized in the coverage of the Super Bowl" (AS, 5/6).
