League Notes: Lleyton Hewitt Criticizes Davis Cup Overhaul

Australia's Davis Cup captain, Lleyton Hewitt, issued a "stinging critique of a proposed overhaul" of the Davis Cup, branding it a "money-grabbing" exercise that will "ruin one of the great competitions in world sport." After conducting a detailed analysis of the "bombshell proposal" released last month, Hewitt was "scathing" of the manner in which the ITF is treating the 117-year-old event. He said, "You can ask anyone for the past 50 years who has played the Davis Cup and (this proposal) is not what it is about, nor what it should be about" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 3/23).

Indian Premier League organizers said that the '18 season will feature the decision review system for the first time. IPL Chair Rajeev Shukla confirmed that the technology will be used when the 11th edition of the tournament gets underway next month. India "resisted the technology for years but finally adopted it" in '16, becoming the last test nation to do so (AFP, 3/22).

Romanian Rugby Federation President Alin Petrache condemned as "hooliganism" the behavior of the Spanish players who pursued Romanian referee Vlad Iordachescu at the end of their defeat by Belgium on Sunday. He said, "I am deeply saddened and disappointed by the attitude of the Spanish players, representatives and fans. There is no room for hooliganism, misconduct and denigration in rugby" (REUTERS, 3/21).
